I don’t even know where to start explaining this bar. The first time I entered Mulligan’s Pub I was a little intimidated; it was dark, smoky, and loud. This wasn’t the typical bar crowd that I had been exposed to. There were girls with mohawks, almost everyone seemed to have a collection of tattoos, gauges, and piercings, and everyone dressed extremely loose (except for one guy, looking way out of place, wearing a tuxedo).
I liked this scene; it was different than what I had encountered at some of the other popped-collar infested bars in Grand Rapids. Most of the bars I had been to in GR consisted of women who wore too much make-up and the overwhelming scent of fruity cologne. I eventually made my way to the bar and ordered a pitcher of Pabst Blue Ribbon and couldn’t believe the price: only $4. I tipped well, sat down at the bar, and quickly realized this was going to become one of my favorite places in the city. Wu-Tang was playing in the jukebox, everyone was extremely nice, the service was fast, and there is no other place in Grand Rapids that can beat their prices. With $4 pitchers of PBR and $1.25 Old Style bottles all day/everyday, not to mention amazing drink specials on top of everything else, Mulligan’s pub is definitely a premier establishment. I urge all of you to check out this bar. I go with a group of friends every Monday, which is free popcorn and pool night. I suggest trying their house shot, a “Mulligan Stew,” and their Long Islands.
